Week 7 - Chapter 8 Copyright and Intellectual Property

So you have become a great online teacher!!!! Better protect all that work you did preparing a terrific course. You can try and protect YOUR property in some of the following ways: using password protected sites or course management systems, use software that allows you to protect your work from being copied, use Adobe Acrobat for some protection capabilities, use streaming video that can't be copied. Here is a site that we use where I work in a school district: http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/scc/legislative/teachkit/.

I have been learning about copyright laws and how they apply to technology in two of my classes and never realized what the laws are. It is upsetting that people would "steal" stuff online and not have a problem with it. As a user it is important to know how to protect yourself as well as know the guidelines for using other peoples things as well. Stanford University Libraries has a wonderfully detailed website on copyright laws and fair use at http://fairuse.stanford.edu/. This will answer any question you may have.

My interest is in the rights the institution that I work for may have to my work. This was something I'd never thought about until I took this online teaching course. It sounds like it's a gray area right now that needs to be ironed out, as do so many other issues when it comes to digital, electronic material. It sure was easier to keep course materials to oneself when they were in the file cabinet rather than when they are posted on the web.
